Lufan: Tomorrow is the time to go, already 48 days in Indonesia, I feel that the time really flies. This 48 days I genuineness felt as a volunteer working in the YPU, although sometimes I would feel doing nothing, but I’m trying to help them and joining their activities. Most of the students here are cheerful and lively , actively facing the life. From which I learned a lot, and I have no reason to work or study lazier. I think I will be more optimistic in the face of life after I finished my volunteer life here, and I will always support my students in YPU. I hope they will be successful in the future.

WAYS TO VOLUNTEER & BE INVOLVED

Pre-event

1. Share our Facebook event page, event webpage and spread the word about our event! (Do remember our website is in two languages, so you can share in either languages!)

2. Sell or buy our raffle tickets!

3. Donate like new items such as books, color materials (pencils, pens), household appliances, soft toys etc. at our orphanage: Jl. Bangunan Timur No. 31 Kel. Kayu Putih Jakarta Timur 13210

4. Connect us with sponsors or media for the event. If you know a company who might be able to sponsor event prizes, donate or have connections with the media to cover the event, we’ll appreciate your efforts!

Event day

1. Set-up volunteers
Arrive early on location to set up chairs, booths, decorations and make sure everything is in place. If you work for a decoration or furniture loaning company and think you may be able to help us supply decorations items, chairs, tables etc., feel free to get in touch.

2. Make-up and costume
As our students will be performing, we’ll appreciate if you can make them shine on stage. If you wish to wish to help out with costumes, please contact us in advance and be prepared to meet pre-event.

3. Food & Beverage
Take orders and help out with making food and drinks.

4. Bazaar booths
Run and manage bazaar booths or entrance ticket booths, interact with the guests, do greetings or guestbook. We are still open to bazaar booth ideas. If you have any, feel free to leave your thoughts. Our location is indoors.

5. Ushers
To ensure all guests are seated before our “Dream Generation” performance commences.

SPONSORS

1. Sponsor food items or small prizes for our food and game booths. If you are a great baker for example, you can sign up to make a few boxes of eclairs which can be sold during the event. You can also contribute other food or drink items such as soft drinks, tea bags etc. Please contact us in advance about your contribution so we can plan accordingly.
You may also contribute small prize items for our game booths such as soft toys, gift baskets, snacks or candies.

2. Sponsor electronic goods and other prize items
You may choose to donate electronic goods in kind for our prizes such as a laptop, TV, mobile phones or household appliances such as coffee makers, iron etc.

Fred is an extremely motivated child. Unfortunately, after finishing elementary school, he was unable to attend middle school because of his family’s tight financial situation.

At first, he was really disappointed about it as he really wanted to continue his education. Later, he went on to help his parents sell boiled eggs around Kelimutu Lake, a place that is usually crowded with visitors.

It was when he was selling eggs that he met the person who later brought him to Jakarta. This person was Martin, YPU’s founder. It was with a fiery passion that Fred accepted Martin’s offer to resume schooling again.

Now in Jakarta, Fred is starting on the process of building his dreams.

“I want to start a successful boiled egg business and be able to afford sending my younger brothers and sisters to school.”

A noble dream to work towards indeed.

Aside from being an excellent painter and dancer, Fred is also a hard worker. We wish all the best for Fred so he can return to his hometown and serve his community.

Achieving 10,000 New Entrepreneurs from the orphanage is a powerful dream of Prima Unggul Foundation. We have a commitment and consistency to develop entrepreneurship based education with a focus on building character /integrity, changing mindset, excellence in science, and the development of entrepreneurial skills. The four components we perform are systematic and planned. 

To hone entrepreneurial skills development, we developed several business units include: Raising Lele Fish, Mushroom Cultivation, Selling Tape (a traditional Indonesian fermented snack), Selling Salak (Snake Fruit), Dawet Ireng (traditional cold dessert), handicraft, as well as offering services, namely Mathematics courses and Motor washing.

The business units we have started are simple, but we want to develop these as a training tool for orphanage children because it is through these activities that they learn leadership, responsibility, discipline, courage, creative, innovativeness, fighting spirit, teamwork, communication skills, and learn to manage finances. We believe all this could tangible capital in becoming an entrepreneur.

Our hope is to encourage empowerment efforts through a variety of resources, both in the form of money, goods, ideas, time to provide all the training and advice that optimize various potentials that are and will be fostered by the orphanage children.

While I was in Jakarta last week, I visited  Yayasan Prima Unggul Entrepreneurship Senior High School. Yayasan is a non-profit organization that aims at transforming orphans into entrepreneurs. I heard about this organization from my friend, Bel, and got interested in this concept. Students who attend this school are orphans from various parts of Indonesia. They learn about entrepreneurship, pick up some hands-on skills like baking and crafts. They had sold some products and created their own revenue. I decided to drop by the school and teach an hour-long English lesson together with Bel.

Upon reaching the place, we heard singing and it sounded so angelic that we thought it was from an audio system. The students were singing and playing a traditional musical instrument, Angklung. I was pretty familiar with this instrument as my students also learned to play it in school. I managed to snap a few pictures and recorded some videos.

We had a short introduction before we began our lesson. The students came from different parts of Indonesia like Papua, Sumatra, West Nusa Tenggara, and Yogyakarta. They had pretty basic English speaking skills. Bel and I were initially worried if our lesson would be too difficult for them but we still went on with it.

We wanted to teach the students to create their own skits in English. And we demonstrated a skit scene to them. Bel role-played as an old lady & ukulele passer-by while I role-played as a robber. I would rob the “old lady” (who whacks me back later!), regret my actions at the end, and get advice by an ukulele passer-by. It was funny and a little embarrassing!

The students got into groups, started discussing and writing up their skits. English was not a language they used daily so it was challenging for them. Nevertheless, we could see a lot of effort put into the activity by the students! They asked questions, tried to play around with the props we brought into class and rehearsed their skits seriously. I wish I could speak in Bahasa and assist them more though!

One form of creativity done by the students at our Art Gallery is the making of pencil cases and flower pots from sewage/plumbing parts and discarded sofa covers. They also made paintings from egg shells.

All these activities are part of the realization of the Green Entrepreneurship program that aims to direct YPU students in caring for and preserving the environment. In addition, they have an opportunity in learning how to become an entrepreneur within the environmental/natural field.

DAAI TV (Indonesia), showcased the creativity of our students in a program CARI TAHU (Find out), which was broadcasted on Tuesday , 2nd August 2012 at 18.00 hours; Sunday, 5th August at 14.30; Monday, 6th August at 15.00; and Wednesday, 8th August at 14.30.
